The IIT Madras is an engineering university located in Adyar, the southern part of Chennai city (formerly Madras), in Southern India. Founded in 1959 with technical and financial assistance from the Government of the erstwhile West Germany, IIT Madras was third among currently seven Indian Institutes of Technology established by the Government of India, through an Act of Parliament, to provide world class education and research facilities in engineering and technology.

The IIT Madras is a residential institute located on a 2.5 km² campus that was formerly part of the adjoining Guindy National Park. IIT Madras has nearly 360 faculty, 4,000 students and 1,250 administrative & supporting staff. It has 11 engineering departments and five other departments, such as Humanities and Social Sciences. It offers an MBA program which runs for two years and is aimed at training graduate professionals into capable managers. The IITs are rated among the finest educational institutions in the world in terms of peer-ranking.
