The Mannheim Master of Applied Data Science & Measurement is designed to provide an outstanding online learning experience in the area of data collection and analysis to tomorrow’s leaders. Students can choose from a range of elective courses. The program comprises 90 ECTS credits.

One Program, Many Possibilities

The wide range of courses in the five skill areas – Research Design, Data Generating Process, Data Curation Storage, Data Analysis, and Data Output/Access – guarantees that you gain a thorough understanding of the entire subject area throughout the program. Elective courses allow you to tailor the curriculum to your personal and professional needs. On average, each study period (spring, summer, and fall) includes two to three courses that vary between four and 12 weeks in duration. ECTS credits are awarded accordingly.

Master the Skills Needed to Succeed in a World Shaped by Data

  • Online Learning Environment

    Completing course videos and required readings for class sessions at your own pace makes this program particularly attractive to working professionals, while weekly online meetings and an annual immersion event keep you engaged. You will form close relationships with your classmates and faculty members during the weekly online meetings since classes are small, providing an optimal student-to-faculty ratio.

  • Getting Started in Survey and Data Science

    The first study year includes a course on the principles and fundamentals of survey and data science. You will be introduced to the key terminology and concepts of collecting and analyzing data from surveys and other data sources in order to gain insights and test hypotheses about the nature of human and social behavior and interaction.

  • Immersion Event

    Every year, the University of Mannheim hosts a “Connect@MDM” conference. While one part of the event is exclusive to students, providing you with the opportunity to meet faculty and peers face to face, the other part is dedicated to facilitating information exchange in the area of survey and data science across various sectors. The conference brings together students, professionals, and researchers for workshops, talks, and networking. Past events have welcomed professionals from Deutsche Bundesbank, Facebook, Google, and Tableau, as well as leading experts from universities around the globe.

  • Collaborative Approach

    Together with a team of fellow students, you will apply the knowledge and methodological skills you have acquired during your studies in a comprehensive practical project for one of our partner companies (Project Consulting Course) as well as in your Team Master Project.

Team Master Project

For the Mannheim Master of Applied Data Science and Measurement, the indivdiual master thesis will be adressed with our proven Multi Competence Team (MCT) approach.

There is a great demand for data experts in organizations of all sizes and in all industries. The Mannheim Master of Applied Data Science & Measurement will prepare you for various positions in which you collect and analyze data. Our core curriculum provides you with the necessary knowledge and skills to successfully work on data projects. In addition, we offer a wide range of elective courses that enable you to tailor the curriculum to your professional and personal needs.

You will learn how to

  • apply appropriate quantitative methods to answer research questions;
  • provide subject matter experts with usable measurement strategies and methodologies to meet their decision needs;
  • develop and administer questionnaires and other data collection methods;
  • evaluate data quality;
  • analyze the collected data and combine the results with insights from other sources;
  • link records from different databases;
  • consider legal and ethical aspects when collecting and analyzing the data;
  • write replicable and reproducible analysis code; 
  • visualize data and communicate results;
  • deliver insights and recommendations clearly to relevant audiences; and
  • communicate and discuss statistical analyses with clients.

The Mannheim Master of Applied Data Science & Measurement will allow you to take positions such as Survey Methodologist, (Survey) Sampling Statistician, (Quantitative) User Experience Researcher (UXR), Research Scientist, and Decision Scientist. You help organizations to organize the data pipeline, from data collection or ingest to final data product with a focus on the people they serve (e.g., citizens for governments, users for internet platforms, customers for companies). With your skills, you help create understanding and empathy around peoples’ preferences and needs, stated and unstated. This can be done by collecting data through surveys, experiments, or analyzing log data. Results from this work usually help to create new insights, products, and services. To be effective in these positions, you will apply learned skills such as delivering compelling, written, in-person, and visual presentations of research findings.
